Verb Connection by Jaime Salazar, The city in the electronic era is the focus of this third volume of the boogazine Verb. Verb Connection considers the impact of electronic technology on urban reality, on the forms which it is takes, on new phenomena and that which generates it, but also on the means through which all aspects of city space are experienced and lived. This exploration ranges from the strange typological hybrids of the ultra-dense Asian city, to the specifically American mixture of real and entertainment city, to the relationship between the physcial network on the ground and its sister network the Internet. Rem Koolhaas and the Harvard Design Institute go shopping; Annete Baldauf visits the open-air mall; and Norman Klein travels from the Vatican to Las Vegas. Colorful, tactile, dense, and packaged in its own very contemporary design, Verb Connection remains devoted to cutting-edge issues in architecture and design.
Explorations in the Sociology of Consumption: Fastfood, Credit Cards and Casinos by George Ritzer, In this book, one of the leading social theorists and cultural commentators of modern times, turns his gaze on consumption. George Ritzer, author of the famous McDonaldization Thesis, demonstrates the irrational consequences of the rational desire to consume and commodify. He examines how "McDonaldization "might be resisted, and situates the reader in the new cultural spaces that are emerging in society: shopping malls, casino hotels, Disneyfied theme parks and Las Vegas -- the new cathedrals of consumption' as he calls them. The book shows how new processes of consumption relate to globalization theory. In illuminating discussions of the work of Thorstein Veblen and the French situationists, Ritzer unearths the roots of problems of consumption in older sociological traditions. He indicates how transgression is bound up with consumption, through an investigation of the obscene in popular and postmodern culture.
